Historia est magistra vitae!

History is the teacher of life, said the ancient Romans. Yet we are often told that educational content such as history, literature and art is not practically useful knowledge and that it should be reduced or even removed from the school curriculum.

What is your opinion on that?

Part 1:

  • If you had to explain it to a child, what would you say about why we should learn history and how it can benefit us? Or maybe you have a different opinion.

  • Did you enjoy learning history at school?

  • What kind of history teachers did you have?

  • Compare how history is taught in your home countries? How many lessons per week, is it also part of high school education, what ratio of home and world history is there, etc.?

  • Do you like history these days?

  • Do you read books based on historical events?

  • Did you like any TV series or movies based on historical events and what attracted you to them?

  • Do you think that historical events in movies should be presented accurately or is one allowed to have creative freedom in that sense?

Part 2:

  • Share interesting facts / stories about Swedish history that you have learned!

  • Have you visited any historically important places in Sweden?

  • Do you think it is important to know the history of the country you live in?

  • Tell others some interesting facts about the history of your home country.

    • When was your country / nation first mentioned?

    • Who are some historically important people from your country or what are some particularly important events...?

  • What is your opinion on how to have a balance between learning from history but not being stuck in it? For example, how to approach painful events like wars.
